Do we eat worse when we’re in a group?

I have a theory that I’ve been working on for a while now:  Women (at least those in my social circles) eat worse as the group they’re in gets larger.

Example:  When I started at my current job a year ago I was 1 of 4 women in the office.  For my first 3 months there, I think I ate fast food maybe 4 times.  In March, my company started hiring like crazy, at one point we were up to about 10 women in the office at one time.  The calls of “so-and-so is going to XYZ for lunch, do you want anything?” ballooned from once a month to once a day.  While I did not partake every day, there were some weeks when I ate fast food up to 3 times per week.

It’s no surprise that I’ve gained about 10 pounds in the last year, as well as taking a huge hit in my wallet.  Since the new year started, I have had fast food for lunch at work maybe twice, which I feel is still too much.  When I eat a burger & fries for lunch, I always feel sleepy and gross all afternoon.  Why don’t I remember from day-to-day or week-to-week how bad I feel after?  It’s not worth it!

I’ve started making some small changes to my workday eating to help me tune out the call of McDonalds:

1.  Planning a wholesome, balanced lunch every day to look forward to

2.  Eating my lunch about 20 minutes earlier than everyone else in the office – by the time they call, I’ve already eaten!

3.  Green-Mint tea makes my tummy feel full!  If I’m feeling snackish during the day, I grab a cup of tea!

These 3 things are helping me to curb the craving for fast food, and save my lunches out for meals that I will really enjoy!

Have you noticed that your eating choices are manipulated when you’re in a large group?  How do you turn away the fast-food beast? Share!
