Back to reality

What a wonderful vacation!  My husband and I just got back from a week in the Dominican Republic, and it could not have come at a better time!  We are rested, relaxed, and recharged for the first time in a long time, and it feels great!  Below is a brief recap of our trip:

The trip started at 2:00am March 7th.  Our plane left at 6:10, and so we had to be at the airport by 3am.  Luckily, at that time of day, there are few lines, so check-in and security were a breeze.

We decided on some Starbucks for a snack before we got our breakfast on the plane.  Let me tell you that tea+long line for the teeny-tiny airplane bathroom do not mix very well!  In the future, I will try to drink very little before takeoff.

We landed in Puerto Plata, to rainy skies.  However, when the rain stopped, we got to see the awesomeness that was our resort.

We stayed at the Blue Bay Villas Doradas in Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata.  It was an adults-only beach-front resort.  The food was ok, if very repetitive, and the staff was very helpful.  We toured the local city, San Felipe, including the Brugalrum bottling plant.  Tasting rum at 10am is never a good idea.  Never.

My drink of the week was the Caipirinha, which is a mix of sugar, mashed lime, ice, and cachaca (or rum).

Yum Yum Yum.  It is compared to the Mojito in some ways, but doesn’t have the mintyness that that drink does.

We took daily walks along the beach and we encountered a few interesting sights along the way.

Para-sailors who ended up directly over our heads while we were walking.

And a guy that we were kind of concerned about, because he was sleeping in that chair while the tide was coming back in.

All-in-all, a fabulous vacation, which I would recommend to everyone!!

As we travel more together, Husby and I are slowly working out what we like to have with us, and what makes our travel easier.  Our must-haves are:

1. a headphone splitter so we can watch the same movie/listen to the same music if we want to

2. Travel Scrabble.  Nothing takes up time like Scrabble!  It’s basically the only game that I can beat my husband at, so I like to play it a lot.

3. Books! I packed 4 books for this trip, and I read all of them.  Twice.  Maybe when I get an iPhone (hint hint nudge nudge) I will get the e-reader app.  There’s just something about laying in the sun, with a nice girly paperback (I recently discovered Jen Lancaster’s Bitter is the New Black.  She. Is. Hilarious.) that makes me feel so relaxed.

What are your top 3 travel necessities?  What about your top 3 places to travel?
